24 Seconds with Panic at the Disco

If you’ve ever wondered just how large a role the Internet can play in the success of a band, look no further than indie sensation and MTV darlings, Panic at the Disco.

Formed in a Las Vegas suburb, the band contacted Fall Out Boy lead singer Pete Wentz, linking him to their music via their Pure Volume site. Wentz was so impressed, he flew out to meet and ultimately sign them.

Their album, A Fever You Can’t Sweat Out became a huge hit, selling well over a million copies.

We spent 24 Seconds with Jon Walker and Spencer Smith of Panic at the Disco.

You’ve been touring around on this album for awhile. Is it still enjoyable to play the songs night after night?

Uh, yeah. It did start getting a little monotonous after a few months of touring, but on the last couple of tours, we’ve changed songs, added parts and we’ve changed the way we play certain songs, so it keeps them a little fresher.

Speaking of songs, they have some pretty elaborate titles. Was that a conscious effort when you were putting the album together to not come up with cliche titles?

None of the titles were made up even before the songs were written. Those were all kind of the last thought after they were recorded. A lot of bands have one-word titles, just one word from the chorus of the song. It’s somewhat boring. We always get asked about our titles, and I guess it did what our goal was. People read the title of the song and are more apt to listen to it.

How are Canadian audiences in general compared to American audiences?

Canadian audiences are great.

Do you like Vancouver?

Last time we were here, we got to go around the city a little bit and it seems really nice. We like the mountains.

Touring around on buses, you must learn a lot about each other. How has it been?

We’re definitely not growing apart but you learn what makes people mad and that you can aggravate people very easily if you want to. But I think on the last couple of tours everyone is able to be by themselves if they want or be around people if they want and having that kind of keeps you sane I guess.
