If you’ve ever wondered just how large a role the Internet can play in the success of a band, look no further than indie sensation and MTV darlings, Panic at the Disco.
Formed in a Las Vegas suburb, the band contacted Fall Out Boy lead singer Pete Wentz, linking him to their music via their Pure Volume site. Wentz was so impressed, he flew out to meet and ultimately sign them.
Their album, A Fever You Can’t Sweat Out became a huge hit, selling well over a million copies.
We spent 24 Seconds with Jon Walker and Spencer Smith of Panic at the Disco.
You’ve been touring around on this album for awhile. Is it still enjoyable to play the songs night after night?
Uh, yeah. It did start getting a little monotonous after a few months of touring, but on the last couple of tours, we’ve changed songs, added parts and we’ve changed the way we play certain songs, so it keeps them a little fresher. Read the full article »
Atlantic Records has reportedly talked to Panic! At the Disco about writing and being part of the “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle” – now titled TMNT – movie soundtrack, but nothing has been decided yet. Keep reading for part of an interview where the movie producer, Tom Gray, talks about the soundtrack.
Do you have a running time yet?
Gray: I think we’re at 81 and change, and then probably five on getting out credits, the end credits. We’re toying now with some kind of visual at the end so it’s not just an endless 500 people endlessly crawling there. It’ll be music over that. We have a deal with Atlantic Records who are coming up with various groups to drop in. It won’t be when we had SBK, we had a lot of that techno sound, Ya Kid K, and all that, Vanilla Ice.
Have any groups come to you and say they want to do it?
Gray: A few, yeah, a few; they actually talked to Panic at the Disco. I don’t know if they’re going to end up in the thing, but there were a few that were big fans that wanted to come in and write something special; we are having some of the Atlantic artists write certain scenes now, and we’re listening to them, and we’re deciding whether that really works, or we’ll do score. But soundtrack albums aren’t what they used to be back in the day, so it’s hard.

Ryan Ross bought his C55 Mercedes three months ago, but it’s been parked in his Las Vegas garage ever since. When the Panic! at the Disco guitarist climbs behind the wheel, cues up Tom Waits’ new Orphans collection and starts pushing buttons on the navigation system, he’s still not sure how it all works. Ross is searching downtown Vegas for Panic’s favorite local sandwich chain, Port of Subs, to grab a quick bite before the second-to-last show on the band’s arena tour: a sold-out concert at the Orleans Hotel & Casino for 7,500 fans, their families, friends and three-quarters of Fall Out Boy, who flew in from Los Angeles to see their proteges’ biggest hometown gig yet. Later tonight, Ross, 20, will face the crowd dressed as a gothed-out Oliver Twist, black liner fanning from his right eye like a tangle of tree branches and a newsboy cap covering his thick brunet quiff. But it won’t be Ross’ first time onstage at the Orleans: Two and a half years ago, he was here in a gown and mortarboard for his high school graduation.
When Ross walks into a strip-mall Port of Subs with drummer Spencer Smith and singer Brendon Urie, both 19, the shop is empty except for two cold-cut slingers, neither of whom recognizes the three local celebrities clamoring to upgrade to combo meals when they hear that Rolling Stone is picking up the tab. A few bites into his sandwich — “the Pilgrim,” with turkey, cranberry sauce and stuffing — Ross rubs his jaw and notes that his wisdom teeth are coming in. After listening to Smith and Urie discuss how generous a helping one ought to get when one requests “extra mayo and mustard,” Ross remarks that the Pilgrim is his second Port of Subs sandwich since this morning. When Urie says he’s only on his first, Ross is befuddled: “What have you been doing all day?”
“I had to pack my Dior case,” Urie answers, as if it were the most normal thing in the world for a teenager shoveling five-dollar fast food into his mouth to have a $1,500 bag from a Parisian couture designer. “And then I cleaned my room. Because it was starting to smell.” Read the full article »
[...] Flowers has sledged numerous bands including young acts such as Fall Out Boy, Green Day and fellow Las Vegans Panic! At the Disco.
Panic singer Brendon Urie says his band were hurt by Flowers’s criticism but have accepted his apology.
“I have their album and I think their singles and videos are great,” Urie says. “It sucks they were talking crap for a while about us but thank God it’s not awkward now to talk to them.” smh.com.au

Panic! at the Disco. That’s right, the Las Vegas foursome is gracing our next cover, which hits stands this Friday. We dropped by their cover shoot to make sure we didn’t miss any hijinks and caught them goofing around on the set, fussing about their costumes and barely suppressing their horror when the photographer mussed their coiffures. Before they sat down to do an exclusive behind-the-scenes interview with us [Watch Here], guitarist Ryan Ross wandered off with the band’s manager, inciting the other three guys to threaten to oust him from the band. (They were kidding, of course.) And it went downhill from there… – rs.com
