CONCERT REVIEW
PANIC! AT THE DISCO
WHEN: Sunday night
WHERE: Everett Events Center

This is the review of an average band that may, just may, become a legend.

One album, one video and — BAM! — Panic! At the Disco was at the top (of the high school scene). Like Vegas brethren the Killers, Panic! plays a dancing version of post-punk with wry, ironic lyrics, lots of bounce, lots of jangle but not a lot of substance.

Perhaps the emo movement gave listeners too much of the emotionally heavy stuff and now the pendulum has swung the other way to fun little songs about nothing. But depth isn’t everything and what Panic! lacks in profundity, it makes up in presentation.

The “Nothing Rhymes With Circus” tour is one part rock show, one part cabaret and one part, well, circus replete with contortionists, ribbon twirlers, stilt walkers, mimes and four very sexy ladies who double as dancers, showgirls, nurses, brides, ballerinas. It all adds up to a charming spectacle that has little to do with the music, except that they both share a theatrical, flamboyant style. Read the full article »

Cheeks dotted bright red and wearing a ringmaster’s coat, Panic! at the Disco’s frontman Brendon Urie made the announcement Friday night at Memorial Coliseum:

“Ladies and gentlemen, prepare yourself for an amazing spectacle of sight and sound!”

But the emo-pop foursome had already plunged into the opener “The Only Difference Between Martyrdom and Suicide is Press Coverage” and flanked by a chorus of dancers — a showgirl, a ballerina, a contortionist, a back-flipping acrobat — the spectacle of songs was certainly well on its way. You know, when Panic! At The Disco signed with Pete Wentz’s label, they hadn’t even played a live show. Now look at them, all selling albums and headlining tours and dressing all fancy and such. Before the guys appeared on MOD, we caught up with guitarist Ryan Ross and bassist Jon Walker in the greenroom!

It’s been said that on your next album, you’re gonna try to do things you’ve never done. Do you think it’s dangerous to toy with a successful formula?

Jon: I don’t think we had a formula to begin with. It’s dangerous but, you know, live life on the edge. You have to gamble.

It didn’t start as a formula, but you have a particular sound that people accept as yours.

Ryan: It’s just gonna change naturally as we continue as a band. There’s some songs that don’t sound like they should be on the same record but are. It’s not gonna be – we’ll still sing in english. Read the full article »

It was Panic! At the ice rink!

I normally cover theater, so Tuesday was to be a night off with a 13-year-old diehard fan of Vegas pinup boys Panic! at the Disco. Turns out it was some of the best theater I’ve ever seen – even if it was at DU’s lousy ice arena. This was a Queen concert accentuated with circus freaks and “Cabaret” Kit Kat Girls.

The rousing hour of singalong circus rock – themed as a Victorian carnival/freak/fetish show – opened with showman Brendon Urie centering a horizontal line of 10 bandmates and hot dancers walking out together like a Tim Burton fashion runway.

Knocking out hits like “I Constantly Thank God for Esteban,” this was visually moving, epic storytelling with pulsating choreography. Dressed in swashbuckling costumes and wearing the makeup of goth marionettes, these boys have clearly attended their share of Cirque du Soleil shows in their hometown.

The music may be derivative, but Panic! honors its ’80s generational links to Freddy Mercury and The Cure by taking showmanship to an eye-popping, orgiastic new level. We’re talking vaudeville, burlesque, rhythmic gymnastics, marching band, contortionism, ballet and even a wedding on stilts (“I Write Sins, Not Tragedies”).

Last Tuesday, Jack’s Mannequin and Panic! at the Disco came to the Palace of Auburn Hills. The bands were preceded by the performance of the Plain White Tees — a power-pop band based out of Villa Park, Illinois.

[...]

After the exit of Jack’s Mannequin, the crowd was left in anticipation of Panic! at the Disco. In between sets, the only objects present on stage were a vintage piano and an antique-looking red curtain covering the backdrop — foreshadowing the characteristics of the upcoming show.

When the curtains finally opened, audiences were greeted by Panic! at the Disco, who appeared onstage along with a collection of other characters. While the band itself was dressed in vintage ringmaster-esque attire and makeup — with frontrunner Brendon Urie painted to look like a dummy-puppet or marionette of sorts — the additional performers each depicted a different circus-appropriate role, ranging from an acrobat to a “freak on a leash” to a belly-dancer to a ballet dancer. At 21, bassist Jon Walker is the oldest member of Panic! at the Disco, one of the country’s hottest young rock groups. When they’re not on the road, Walker and his fellow bandmates — Ryan Ross, Spencer Smith and Brendon Urie — still live at home with their parents.

Despite their youthfulness, the band managed to record a show-stopping debut album, “A Fever You Can’t Sweat Out,” which has sold more than 1 million copies since its release last year.

At last summer’s MTV Video Music Awards, the band won Video of the Year for “I Write Sins Not Tragedies.”

“It’s been an awesome year for us,” Walker said in a phone call from a tour stop in Denver. Read the full article »
