After a successful headlining summer tour, where they previewed tracks from their forthcoming A Weekend in the City, Bloc Party decided to broaden their appeal to emo fans by accepting the opening slot on Panic! at the Disco’s fall theater tour.

After only three shows, Bloc Party pulled out because drummer Matt Tong’s lung collapsed. And while any fan of Silent Alarm could have predicted that touring with the ultra-popular emo-pop stars would be a mistake, the members of Bloc Party seem to have come to that realization only recently.

Bloc Party frontman Kele Okereke told MTV News, “The preferred course of action would’ve been to finish the tour, because we would’ve warmed into it…We’ve only done one support tour before…It was a challenge, and so we tried to step up. I don’t know, we got lots and lots of MySpace friend requests because of it. But to be honest, I’ve never heard any of [Panic's] music,”

Tong was not as diplomatic, saying, “I’d like to think those who saw us on [the Panic tour] did take it into their hearts and were concerned with the intention of the lyrics, but I do know that to some people it’s just about hearing a song on the radio or having it on their phone.”

Let the mudslinging begin.

Barely making the age requirements and the deadline, Alison Hillard of Frederick was recently named the winner of a national YouTube.com video contest.

Presented by Atlantic Records in association with the independent music label Fueled by Ramen, the theme of the contest was based on the rock band Panic! At the Disco’s hit song “Lying is the Most Fun a Girl Can Have Without Taking Her Clothes Off.”

The band asked fans how they could best answer the question “What’s the most fun you can have without taking your clothes off?”

The grand prize: An all-expenses paid trip to see the final show of the band’s world tour in Las Vegas.

While surfing the Web, Ms. Hillard, 14, discovered she could broadcast herself online for a chance to hear the band play live in concert. She knew right away she wanted to participate. Read the full article »

If you’re Panic! at the Disco, how do you end a year in which you went from relative unknowns to one of the hottest bands on the planet?

“I might get a tattoo that just says ’2006,’ ’cause it was such a big year,” bassist Jon Walker said. “Really, just the whole year in general has been amazing to us.”

So a tattoo (maybe?) and “a little time off for the holidays,” added drummer Spencer Smith. “Then we’re going to start writing a new record over the winter and hopefully we have something out next fall.”

Panic are also releasing one more single from A Fever You Can’t Sweat Out, “Build God, Then We’ll Talk,” which is as much a treat to themselves as it is to their fans.

“It’s the last song we wrote for this record. It’s all of our favorite song and we’ve wanted it to be a single pretty much ever since,” guitarist Ryan Ross explained. “That’s probably the most exciting one for us, but it’s kind of like we’re doing it for us. I don’t know if it’s going to be a huge hit or whatever.” Read the full article »
