It’s very cool to not like our band,” confesses Spencer Smith, drummer for loved-by-the-kids-but-loathed-by-the-critics Las Vegas quartet Panic! at the Disco.

He’s got a point. PitchforkMedia.com, the online barometer for all things hipster cool, has called the band a “steaming pile of garbage,” while All Music Guide goes a little easier, opting to describe them as “formulaic” and “interchangeable,” among other choice adjectives. And there’s no need to mention the online trolls who scour message boards and Wikipedia entries for a chance to question the band members’ sexuality. It’s the kind of thing that might grate on some people, but Smith insists Panic! have learned to ignore it.

“There’s a lot of people that say, ‘This band shouldn’t be popular; they sound just like Fall Out Boy and every other band,’” says Smith, “and I guarantee you [those people haven't] listened to our record to make a comment like that. I really do think that if you listen to our CD, every single track… it would be difficult to compare us to all the other bands that are in that music scene.” Read the full article »

Panic! At The Disco are nominated for a Billboard Music Award in the Rock Album of the Year category with A Fever You Can’t Sweat Out. Congratulations! Other nominees are: James Blunt, Nickelback, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Tool, The Fray and Bob Dylan.

The Billboard Awards will air Monday, December 4th at 8PM on FOX. There’s no word if Panic! will be presenting or even in attendance, but just for the record – there’s no concerts scheduled for that day.

UPDATE: FOX updated their list and removed over half of the “nominees”, including Panic! At The Disco.

Former Panic! At The Disco Wilson, who left the cult US band in May (06), has launched legal proceedings over royalties he claims he is owed from the group’s 2005 debut album “A Fever You Can’t Sweat Out”.

Wilson claims he was dumped after a row over money, but his former bandmates insist his lifestyle and attitude were in stark contrast with their own.

Guitarist Ryan Ross says, “It was tough, because we all went to high school together. (But) it just got to a point where it didn’t seem like he was taking it seriously and was along for the ride. And he started to get into things we weren’t happy about. It was a hard decision.”

Replacement bass player Jon Walker adds, “This band is everything to these guys, so it’s not fair to them if someone in the band can’t keep up.” Bassist Brent Wilson was fired from the group because “he couldn’t keep up” musically and didn’t take his responsibilities seriously enough.
